The analysis of the status of proper names in the study of linguistics seems to bring about more questions than answers and the more we delve into the nature of the proper name the more problematic it becomes to define it. There is no one unifying theory that explains the presence of the notion without raising further questions. The problem of what constitutes a proper name has been exciting grammarians since ancient times and some of the theories have indeed persevered and are still considered valid today. In the current paper we shall look at some cornerstones in the linguistic study of proper names as well as the principles often employed in the attempts to solve the problem of their status. Finally some prominent issues will be addressed concerning the category in question and possible confusion with other classes of words.
