THE GRAMMATICAL CATEGORIES OF THE ENGLISH NOUN – CASE

The grammatical category of case in English has been notoriously difficult to define. This difficulty arises partly from the simplification of the English inflectional system and partly from the confusion which stems from the differences in terminology among different authors. Historically, English had a fully developed system of inflectional cases which gradually underwent a process of reduction. Presently there are only remnants of the old case system, most noticeable in the pronoun paradigm of the language (Huddleston & Pullum, 2012). The only largely accepted category of case in English today is the genitive, which is marked by the ‘s and has certain syntactic and semantic functions.
